Welcome
Hawkshead Trout Farm, which has co-existed with the fishery on Esthwaite Water since 1981 has been closed. As well as enhancing the lakes mesotrophic condition, the farm was identified as a contributing cause of phosphate pollution within the catchment. The recent removal of the cages was a result of successful negotiation with several government agencies, spearheaded by Natural England. Collectively they seek to fulfil their duties under the Water Framework Directive.
With the farm gone the lake now looks bigger and certainly more picturesque and with no fish to tend to, more time can be devoted to running this superb fishery. From 2010 quality stock fish will be bought in from reputable sources. They will be stocked throughout the season and our general stocking policy will remain the same.
Last season was a strange one to say the least. Although the fishery rod average was a healthy 4 fish per angler, the year had its peculiarities. Spring although arriving late, was fairly average weather wise and throughout March and April the fishing was good and rod numbers up. High water temperatures during May and June produced a premature dip in the seasons fishing. These months are usually associated with excellent catches . Heavy rainfall during July and August improved catch per unit effort, with the fishery producing some exciting sport. A trend which continued throughout the back end of the season. November was a wash out! Cumbria endured its heaviest flooding on record and as i write the county is recieving its heaviest snowfall for a decade. Lets hope this year see's a return to normality! |

Angling Trust
Anglings new single organisation that represents the interests of all anglers was launched in January 2009, is already falling short of its membership targets in its first year. This is a major blow to the organisation and the sport as a whole. The formation of the trust brings with it a positive new future for angling. For the first time ever, there is a single body to take cohesive action to solve all the problems that affect our sport. All anglers in the U.K are now urged to join. For more information log onto www.anglingtrust .net.

Flooding
At the end of November Cumbria recieved its worst flood conditions on record. 2009 was another wet season, however the November event was by far the worst in living memory. The rainfall was so intense it destroyed bridges and blocked roads throughout the county. The fishery was cut off for several days and severe damage was incurred to our ticket office and boat jetty. The clean up is still in progress, however everything should look brand new for the start of the forthcoming season. |

Flying The Flag
Masterline Walker Team Esthwaite member Dave Morris represented Esthwaite Water at the Troutmasters final 2009 and finished a very credible 6th overall. Dave competed against 150+ other contestants on Grafham Water. The Troutmasters is the largest trout fishing competition nationwide, so full credit to Dave, well done and thank you for your efforts! |
Brown Trout Stocking
Last year there was an increase in the number of Brown Trout stocked into the fishery. These cracking fish established themselves very well. They fed well and settled down in the lake and fish that were 1lb 8oz in March tipped the scales at almost 3lb by October. Feedback regarding their fighting qualities was encouraging and compliments have been numerous, however we must remind customers that it is still a fishery rule that all Brown Trout must be returned. |
England Youth
Hawkshead Angling Club junior member John Macintosh aged 13 put in a great performance at Grafham Water last season to qualify for the England youth team. In difficult conditions, many competitiors struggled to catch, however John netted 6 rainbows to secure his place in the squad. Also local lad James Atkinson aged 14 qualified at the same event. Both now go on to fish the home international on Grafham this season. A very well done to you both! |
