ESTHWAITE WATER REPORT SPONSORED BY MASTERLINE 26/8/10
Recent northerly winds have churned the surface layers up and fish are back near the surface and feeding with gusto. During the daytime fish have been hitting the fry hard with slow sink lines and lures such as cats whisker, zonkers, minkies and sparklers all taking their fair share of fish. On over cast days fish have also been feeding hard at the surface and taking any hatching flies and terrestrials that have been blown onto the water. Hatches of buzzers, sedges and damsels have been in evidence and daddies and beetles have also been present in good numbers to provide excellent surface sport, given the right conditions. Imitative patterns have been a must during the mornings and evenings.
Best areas have been in front of the ticket office, Strickland bay and in the north basin the weather buoy, grubhole and weather bay have also been hotspots of late!
Gareth Disley enjoyed a cracking days sport from the boats to record 9 rainbows to a variety of fry patterns fished from the boats. Best fish tipping the 2lb mark.
Season ticket holder John Gardner from Morecambe fished the boats and recorded 7 fish to 3lb+ fishing floating line and montana’s in Weather Bay.
With the children still off school on their summer holidays, the youngsters have been having a whale of a time and catching some cracking bags of fish. Josh Fenton aged 8[see attached photo] and Peter Madison aged 11 had a cracking day from the boat jetty, catching 15 rainbows to 3lb+ on worm and spinners. Another youngster and Hawkshead Angling club member Henry Radcliffe aged 12 took 4 rainbows to 2lb+ on float fished worm from the boats.
Two other H.A.C members Ron and Mary Jones fished from the boats and took 5 rainbows to 3lb 1oz, again on worms.
Best recent fish was a 5lb 1oz beauty taken on spinner by local Ross Thompson from Coniston.
Prospects for the forthcoming weeks looks excellent with the onset of the autumninal weather now starting to kick in. Fish should continue to be up in the water and provide superb sport for fly, spin and worm anglers alike.
